The Government really doesn't want the outside world to come and visit - unless they're in controlled tour groups which can be supervised and controlled at all times. Because of their oil & gas revenues that don't need money from tourism and the government is terrified that outsiders will import crazy foreign ideas like freedom and human rights.

If it wasn't for the weightlifting, it would only be worth visiting if you're interested in seeing what the claustrophobia of totalitarianism really looks like. In the case of Turkmenistan, it has produced a country which is sterile and numb.
It had crossed my mind to visit the ancient city of Merv, but although I like the idea of getting off the beaten track and away from touristy parts of the world, it doesn't seem like something someone of casual interest would be able to make the most of.

I don’t want to give the impression that Turkmenistan has nothing to offer. If you’re interested in history then Merv, Nisa, and Kunya-Urgench are all worth a look.

The issue is that you can’t easily see them as the Turkmen Government has no interest or desire for independent travellers to visit (though to be fair - I visited the country ten years ago).

In my (amateur) opinion, it's not uncommon for dictatorships to prop up such ideas to play along with the rest of the world. Never read much about their dictator, but found this when googling him

Edit: Just reading the full wiki on Turkmenistan is quite interesting.

NatArem said China won't send a 55. Based on this we can speculate they won't send anyone to the non-Games categories. Based on that my early China prediction:

M61 Qin Fulin + Li Fabin
M67 Chen Lijun + Huang Minhao
M73 Shi Zhiyong + Feng Lüdong
M81 Lü Xiaojun + Li Dayin
    M96 Tian Tao
    M109 Yang Zhe

W49 Hou Zhihui + Jiang Huihua
W55 Li Yajun + Zhang Wanqiong
    W59 Chen Guiming
    W64 Deng Wei
W76 Wang Zhouyu + Zhang Wangli
W87+ Meng Suping + Li Wenwen

It may be good for everyone else attending that some of the big name Iranians won't be there; Ashgabat is less than an hour's drive from the Iranian border.

After watching that, I'm a little surprised they chose to hold World's there. I wonder if there will be a live stream.
