The European Champs are a gold Olympic qualifying event and the last Olympic qualifying event for most European athletes.

So I expect to see the opposite. We'll see athletes taking risks to get big lifts and big totals.

for lifters on the cusp, yes. Especially if they are from eastern blok countries that just go YOLO in comps.

for lifters who are pretty much going (Simon, Lasha, etc) there's no need to go big but they will have about 3+ months before the Olympics.

He's lifting again? The same Khetag Khugaev?

The most recent videos are from 4-6 years ago, big lifts. Some reddit chatter was that he may have gotten tired of the sport, Instagram is mostly hiking/outdoors activities.

Someone posted a supposed chat with Polovkinov about a year ago suggesting he wasn't lifting anymore...

Nat Arem just confirmed that Junior Worlds is canceled with an email screenshot. He suspects that future meets are likely to be canceled.

He has been very active the last year or so. He was at 2019 Euros, 2019 Worlds, Qatar, Rome and Iran. He isn't doing 180/219 though.

Little related to the topic at hand, but one of my "favorite" sightings recently are borderline fluent Turkish youtube commentators.

There's a video of Euro 89kg men? What information is missing? Naim Suleymanoglu. (and that's all usually)

How about worlds 55kg women? Yep, Naim Suleymanoglu.

It's such a strange national reflex. Plus it's never like Taner Sagir or Nurcan Taylan.

However, I will end this post by saying...
    Naim Suleymanoglu.

He's lifting clean now, like all Russians. And I'm not being facetious. He's just a mortal.

    ACTUAL TOPIC

after all these cancelations, will there even be an Olympics?

My highly unqualified opinion: the health scare statistics published so far - to me - don't upgrade this above SARS or H1N1/2009. What's different to past pandemics?

IWF has a policy now on athletes who may have been disadvantaged by competitions being cancelled due to the coronavirus.

    SARs never became a pandemic
    H1N1 had a case mortality rate of 0.01 - 0.08%

Covid 19 has killed 3.4% of patients in China to date, and up to 20% of patients require various degrees of hospital management, with 5 - 10% requiring dramatic medical intervention
