Sorry, I reread my post from a while ago - it was a genuine question, since when is underwear acceptable gym attire? Is it Crossfit? Is it in Western countries only? For women, specifically. For men, spandex shorts have always been a thing and they are not far off. There is definitely a scale of 'comfortable, tight, small gym attire' which extends all the way to 'ass hanging out'. It was a question for historical analysis purposes. What was the catalyst? Who was the first woman to make this kind of thing the standard?

Oddly enough men wear more and more. In the 80s in was really small shorts/spandex shorts and that's it, the aforementioned bathing suit mankini looking singlets like Kakhi had in 1992. Whereas now you have the full sleeveless tshirt singlets, for almost all lifters.
