Well, the 2013 worlds didn't have any bearing on the Olympics. Kaz had a shitton of sanctions but still managed to send 8. So you take the win now and hope you can figure out what to do afterwards (buy more lifters since likely most of their lifters were popped, popped lifters serve their 2 years and are back for the Olympics).

We shall see what sort of impact all of this will have. If you asked me last week who would be IWF President after the Congress, I would have said Mohammed Jalood. Guess what, I still think Jalood will win. What does that mean? I'm not entirely sure actually, probably that we will see addition via subtraction for a while longer in weightlifting rather than full-on revolution.

I guess when the initial story about Rahimov broke it was, "we'll have to see what the appeal / arbitration process yields to see if Lu get another Olympic gold medal".

well, I don't think there's any question now.

Arley Mendez seems likely to be excluded from the Olympics for using Cannabis.

I’m really struggling to see the logic in this. Being excluded from the Olympics seems like a disproportionately harsh penalty for something that arguably shouldn’t even be a code violation.

Somebody posted this on Reddit. The Turkish Olympic silver medalist Daniyar Ismayilov has reportedly failed a domestic/internal doping test in Turkey:

Since his coach is Panchev, I have a hard time believing that the problem was marijuana. Seems like a convenient pretext.

Pretext for what? It sounds like this is being handled by the ITA i.e. it's not an internal positive. He was only totaling 335 back in May as an 81 too.

While I agree the canabis thing needs to go away entirely (although I could see it being used as a PED for say archery or target shooting)...

Like the American female sprinter: its 'on' them.

Punishment for canabis has been severally reduced over the years IIRC, and now the suspension is only a month now in most cases ....

Can't put down the joints for just a couple of months when you full well know about this thing, and the Olympics are coming up?

INB4 second hand smoke version of the burrito/meat excuse.

if you've been around diehard potheads, you know not smoking for a day never happens. toke when they wake, toke when they sleep, toke before they go down anything/go out

also, many athletes are dipshits (as are people). and stress doesn't make for the best judgement calls in the now
