    According to Tom Goegebuer :
    "..
To be clear virtual is not an online event. It is an event to submit an entry with whereabouts according to IWF rules, to make it possible for out of competition testing. There is no real lifting. All athletes can get an extra result, equal to the average of the results that would have been achieved when the competition was stopped with Covid. So all atletes can meet the eligibilty criteria to compete in last period. It doesn't change the level in the ranking list, but doesn't take away the possibilty to compete... "

An unpleasant reminder that a large proportion of the prospective Olympians in the weightlifting world have not been required to submit their whereabouts for almost eleven months (since competitions were suspending in April last year)

North Korea has announced that they are withdrawing of all of their athletes from the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this is have a considerable impact on the qualification and medal standings.

Rim Jong Sim was in line to be the first female lifter to win 3 gold medals. Bummer, I really like watching her lift.

    let's see:

OM Yun Chol 61kg. tbh not sure he could medal

    PAK Jong Ju 67kg

    O Kang Chol 73kg

    RI Song Gum 49kg

    CHOE Hyo Sim 59kg

    RIM Un Sim 64kg

    RIM Jong Sim 76kg

    KIM Un Ju 87kg

    KIM Kuk Hyang SHW

pretty much everyone but Om would likely medal.

also makes the decisions for who China sends difficult seeing as it's mostly just NK lifters who can challenge them in the women's classes (besides 49)

What's the thinking here by the NK's?

Don't like Japan? But they would just come out and say that.

The whole "protecting their athletes from C19" thing? they don't have a vaccine program?
That's very a 3rd-world-country thing to admit from a country trying so hard to project being a world power to contend with ...
....can't borrow some sino-vac from China? really, wtf?

I guess they are afraid to get drug tested to the Nth degree; or all those athletes are dead; or they are afraid of them defecting?

    What?

I think they view this as a threat to their national security. The country above all is a military state.

They'd send a team of likely 100+ people, including all handlers. If they come back with the virus it *could* spread to parts of their armed forces and if they have to quarantine some percentage thereof they will be in a weakened state. The athletes are technically part of the army too.

I believe they're both paranoid but also know they can't or won't have a measured (vaccination) response by late summer.

If they came out and said anything against Japan, they would just be ignored. They might get some other nations to follow suit this way. It's also a big middle finger to Japan.

They are getting 2M vaccine doses from somewhere but that's only 9% population. Let's be real, unless you matter in the North Korean political atmosphere, you aren't likely to get a vaccine. It wouldn't suprise me they would sell some/most of that if they could.

Supposedly they tried to hack Pfizer but didn't succeed.

They also may not have a lot/enough of meds for anyone who did get very sick from it. Including fearless leader and sis/fam.

If we now ban China too we at least get close categories again.
The disparity between rankings and entries is going to be stark.
